As part of our study of coastal locations and our work inspired by Kingdom by the Sea, Year 6 visited Tynemouth on 18 October 2017. We observed evidence of coastal erosion, used our senses to describe our surroundings and made sculptures in the sand inspired by our novel study. The wet weather certainly did not dampen our spirits and we enjoyed hot sausage and chips in the train station before returning back to school.

As you will see from the list of our extra-curricular clubs, there is a wide range of activities which we would encourage your child to try. For all clubs which take place during the school day, your child simply needs to go along and join in. For the after school clubs, please ensure that your child collects the relevant letter from the teacher who runs the club and you complete it and it is returned to school.

If you have any questions about the extra-curricular activities, please contact us.

As part of our new 'Explore' curriculum, we were thrilled to be visited by explorer and adventurer, Conrad Dickinson. Our Year 5 pupils' studies are currently centred around the theme of 'Frozen Kingdom'. Mr Dickinson led an inspirational afternoon including stories of his many expeditions and showing many of his artefacts collected around the world. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed hearing about his exploration experiences!

Hexham Middle School is very proud to have been awarded the International School Award Foundation Certificate by the British Council, for promoting the international dimension across the school and highlighting the benefits of learning in a global context. In their letter, the British Council commented that HMS's 'commitment to extending and embedding internationalism in your curriculum is a valuable aspect of your school ethos'. We look forward to continuing our international activities and learning!

Thanks once again to the generous support of the school's PTA, we were able to welcome the hugely popular children's author Peter J Murray into school this week. Presenting his spooky novels to the children in both Key Stage 2 and 3 was followed by a book signing session whereby Pete and his wife Kath sold over 250 books to eager pupils. Our school has been highly praised on his blog which can be found at www.peterjmurray.co.uk. We're looking forward to welcoming Pete back again in the future.

The HMS newsletter contains school news, information about upcoming events in and outside of school, general notices for parents/carers and dates for your diary.
