HMS was the first school in Northumberland to run a new Bikeability course last week. Transition training is a vital link between Level 2 and Level 3 Bikeability training, delivered by Cycle Experience all over Northumberland.

The day was windy but warm and the pupils were taken on a pre-planned led ride through Hexham, looking at potential areas of interest and how to fully risk-assess parts of Hexham from the eyes of a cyclist. The pupils rode from HMS to QEHS on two different routes avoiding the high street.

The pupils took to the training very well and were very knowledgeable on all aspects of how to cycle in Hexham; the instructors commented that they were a pleasure to teach!

Mr Gaines added that cycling is a great way to stay fit and healthy. At HMS over the next few years we would like to see the number of pupils able to cycle to school increase. Training like this educates our pupils to stay safe and make informed choices as road users.

Year 7 and 8 will be given the chance to undertake Level 3 training at the end of this term.
