The UK Mathematics Trust have this year launched their Junior Challenge. We were delighted that some groups from our Year 8 pupils were able to take part in the national challenge on Thursday 27 April 2017. Mrs Bond and Mr Graham led the challenge and both enjoyed solving the problems as well! Well done to the pupils and we look forward to hearing of your successes once the marking is complete!

Mr Watters.

The HMS newsletter contains school news, information about upcoming events in and outside of school, general notices for parents/carers and dates for your diary.

An electronic copy of the latest edition (April 2017) is available on the Publications page.

Children in Key Stage 2 are soon to welcome Mrs Daykin, local author and parent of two of our pupils, in to school to talk about her recently released novel 'Fish Boy'. For details of an upcoming writer's workshop with Mrs Daykin (as part of the Hexham Book Festival) please follow this link: http://hexhambookfestival.co.uk/programme/chloe-daykin-workshop-for-children-aged-7/

We are very proud to report that Tom Barrett in Year 8 was a very worthy recipient of a certificate of achievement from this university-led challenge. Tom's successful entry was judged by a panel at Newcastle University who identified him as a winner from over 1000 entries. We are very proud of Tom - he completed this challenge at home during the holidays and submitted his entry to the university! Tom and his family have been invited to a celebration evening at the university! A worthy winner and a fantastic young mathematician! Well done to all our pupils who entered this challenge.

On the subject of maths challenges, we have now launched our 'Partnership Maths Challenge'. This new monthly event will see HMS, SJMS, CMS and QEHS battle it out to win points for their schools. This will culminate in a final challenge at QEHS in the summer term. Thank you to the teachers at QE for setting a thought-provoking challenge for all of our year groups at HMS. Next challenge: after the holidays!

The Year Eight pupils recently enjoyed a visit to the Queen’s Hall to watch Théâtre Sans Frontières’ (TSF) adaptation of David Almond’s Heaven Eyes. This was complemented by a workshop in the afternoon where the children got to meet and work with some of the cast in the school hall. The whole day was enjoyed by all involved and provided some fantastic inspiration for our own creative writing. Children across the whole of Year Eight are now working on their own creative stories based on the theme of a ‘journey’ for the TSF competition (endorsed by David Almond) which closes on Monday 24 April 2017.
