On Tuesday 6 June 2017, pupils from HMS raised the rafters of Hexham Abbey as part of Opera North’s ‘Big Sing.’ Over the last few weeks, the children have received training in vocal technique from professional opera singers that enabled them to master some very complex pieces of music that would normally be the preserve of highly trained vocalists. The children’s hard work culminated in a fantastic performance at Hexham Abbey, where the pupils had the opportunity to sing as the chorus alongside professional opera singers and orchestra under the direction of a conductor from Opera North. Very well done to all those who took part!

This half term has been a busy one for our on-going STEM enrichment program. Year 8 had the challenge of guiding Big Trak bots through a variety of tasks. Big Traks are a great way to get you thinking about logical instructions. Programming them to drive forwards and backwards is easy, but driving one through a maze or to a specific goal requires some forward thinking!

Year 7 have had the opportunity to work with the Centre for Life taking part in an engineering workshop to design and make a self-powered vehicle. Designing, testing, re-designing and re-testing to make the vehicle work could only succeed with team work and problem solving skills. We had a range of interesting designs – some more successful than others!

Details of the HMS PTA Summer Fair are in the flyer above.  To support the Fair there will be a non-school uniform day on Friday 16 June, where pupils can bring in an item for the Fair:

  • Aln - chocolate or sweets
  • Coquet - bottles of any description
  • Tweed - items suitable as a gift for a girl or lady
  • Wansbeck - items suitable as a gift for a boy or man

We are once again signing up to compete in the Northumberland SUMDOG challenge! Pupils will recieve their log-in details after the half term break. SUMDOG is a regional contest which involves pupils playing maths games to boost their score on the leader board. We're competing against other schools in our area. As the pupils are in their form classes, the more the form class play - the higher up the leader board they'll get! The contest starts at 8:00 on Friday 16 June 2017! Good luck everyone!

Year 7 and Year 8 boys took part in the Tynedale Hardball Cricket Tournament which was held at the picturesque Corbridge Cricket Club. This coincided with the hottest day of the year (28 degrees Celsius) making the two matches tough to play. Hexham played two games: game one they lost to Corbridge Middle, game two they beat Ovingham on the last bowl. Unfortunately, Hexham ended up in third position due to the other schools having a superior run rate. It was a great afternoon of cricket, thank you to Tom Cant for organising.
