Trust Board

  • Hadrian Learning Trust – Additional Trustees Required

    Following the recent departure of two long-standing trustees, the Board of  Hadrian Learning Trust is keen to appoint two new trustees. The role of trustee in a multi-academy trust is akin to that of a non-executive director of a company or charitable trust. The core functions are:

      • Defining the ethos, objectives and strategic direction;
      • Holding the executive headteacher to account for the educational performance of the schools;
      • Ensuring the sound, proper and effective use of the schools’ financial resources.

    The operational, day-to-day running of the schools is carried out by the executive headteacher with the senior leadership teams.

    What Skills Are We Looking For?

    We aim to have a balanced mix of the skills, experience and knowledge needed to carry out our role, informed by a skills audit.
    We welcome expressions of interest from all who are interested in becoming a trustee but would be particularly keen to hear from individuals who have:

      • either strong financial skills, perhaps with a background in accountancy or financial direction;
      • or professional experience of special educational needs in schools.

    More generally, trustees will have the necessary skills to fulfil the board’s functions effectively, including the ability to:

      • bring a diverse range of perspectives for robust decision-making
      • understand the educational setting and the cultural context of the trust and the communities it serves
      • analyse trust performance data
      • use financial knowledge to hold the executive to account and drive financial efficiency
      • challenge each other effectively and work effectively in committees
      • performance manage the senior executive leader
      • use active succession planning to ensure the board and the trust have the leadership and people it needs to
        remain effective

    We value diversity and therefore welcome applications from all groups and are happy to discuss any reasonable adjustments and support individuals may require in the selection process or on appointment. A tailored induction programme is provided for new trustees. Fundamentally, trustees are required to be aware of and meet ‘The Seven Principles of Public Life’, understand the legal, regulatory and contractual obligations they must meet, and have regard to the statutory guidance issued by the Secretary of State.

    How Much Commitment Is Required?

    The Trust Board meets six times a year on Thursday evenings at 6pm with meetings usually lasting two hours or so. Much of the Board’s work is undertaken by committees which meet three to four times a year, typically in the late afternoon. These committees include a monitoring committee for each school, an HR & Performance Management Committee and a Finance & Audit Committee. We also have a safeguarding group comprising a link trustee and senior leaders that meets three times a year. Trustees also visit the schools as part of their monitoring activities. Each trustee sits on at least one committee or group but this is not a condition of joining the Board.
    Although these are challenging times for all schools, the work is rewarding, as we work together to help our young people become all that they can be.

    How To Apply

    All applications must be made through Anna Vellinga, Clerk to the Trust Board, via avellinga@qehs.net before Friday 26th April.

    You will be asked to submit a CV, along with a short expression of interest and an equal opportunities form which you will find here. Applicants may be invited for an informal interview with the Chair along with the Executive Headteacher.

    If you would like to have an initial informal telephone conversation with the Chair, Veryan Johnston, before deciding whether to apply, please contact Anna Vellinga on avellinga@qehs.net.
