Year 6 STEM Day
Written by Niamh R, Year 6.
On the 7th February 2017, Year 6 had a science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) day, run by students from Newcastle University. In our classes, we rotated round five different workshops including: designing our own animals; creating inventions to save waste; building a bridge with a steady structure; making honeycomb and creating a boat out of plasticine and marbles. The workshops helped us to learn how things work and why they may go wrong.
The first workshop was about learning about the different characteristics of animals and why they needed these features for surviving in their habitats. Using this knowledge allowed us to design an animal of the future. The second workshop was about designing and engineering an invention from recyclable waste, to help reuse the waste and reduce environmental pollution. The next workshop required some good teamworking. We had to build a bridge to cross a river, out of construction equipment. We learned that triangles are the strongest shape for building sturdy structures.

Big Times Table Challenge - Year 5
The results are in from our first Year 5 challenge. Our pupils have calculated the percentage of correct answers in each form class for week one:
- 5MJE 58%
- 5FHA 61%
- 5LWA 63%
- 5SPH 66%
The more you learn; the more chance your class will have of winning the special treat! Keep going! Next challenge for Year 5: Tuesday 7 February 2017; Year 6: Thursday 9 February 2017.
Mastery Maths Week
Next week (week beginning 6 February 2017), pupils in Year 5 will be working in different maths group and could be taught by a different teacher. The aim of the week will be to further develop mastery skills, including: group work and communication; mathematical reasoning and problem solving. The week will be focused on developing key age-related expectations such as: using the four operations; solving complex problems involving money and developing mental maths skills. Learning will feature a focus on maths from other cultures and the development of number systems (Roman numerals). We hope it will be an exciting and challenging week!
SATs Information Evening: 26/01/17
Thank you to all parents/carers who attended last week's SATs Information Evening. The presentation from the evening along with informative documents regarding English and Maths can be found on the Year 6 SATs Information Evening page.
Year 6 STEM Day
On Tuesday 7 February 2017, Year 6 will be taking part in STEM Day. The day will see our Year 6 pupils enjoying an action-packed schedule of learning focused on promoting science, technology, engineering and maths. Sessions will include working with Newcastle University studying 'Amazing Adaptations' and thinking about why 'Waste Matters'. Pupils will also take part in a food technology session, a scientific investigation and a maths themed STEM session. More news and photos to follow!
