KS2 Curriculum Information Evening
Thank you to the many of you who were able to attend last night's 'KS2 Curriculum Information Evening'. It was great to see so many of you! For those who were unable to attend, we have now added the resources to the Supporting maths and English at home area in the 'Curriculum' section of the website. Times Tables in Key Stage 2
Learning times tables is a fundamental skill for our Key Stage 2 pupils. The National Curriculum states that pupils should recall and use multiplication and division facts for multiplications tables up to 12 x 12. Once a pupil has secured this objective, their mathematical understanding and rapid recall will dramatically improve.
In Years 5 and 6, we ask that pupils practise their times tables at home regularly. We suggest that pupils use: Hit the Button (which can be downloaded as an app or used online); use multiplication grids from our school website; write out and memorise key number facts or use a song/rhyme to remember. Any support you can offer with this would be much appreciated. Make a note of their practice in their planner, and we’ll reward pupils with house plus points.
In addition to their weekly homework, we ask pupils to practise times tables weekly in preparation for a short test. The test will focus on a key times table(s) and will include division facts. Pupils will also have opportunities to practise during form times.
Hadrian Learning Trust – Additional Trustees Required
Hadrian Learning Trust, the body responsible for the governance of Hexham Middle School and Queen Elizabeth High School, is currently looking to recruit additional trustees.
The role of Trustee in a Multi-Academy Trust is akin to that of a non-executive director of a company or charitable trust. The core functions are:
- Defining the ethos, objectives and strategic direction;
- Holding the Executive Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the schools;
- Ensuring the sound, proper and effective use of the schools’ financial resources.
The operational, day-to-day running of the schools is carried out by the Executive Headteacher with the Senior Leadership Teams.
KS2 Curriculum Evening
We would like to invite parents/carers to attend a Key Stage Two Curriculum Information Evening on Thursday 16 November 2017 (6.00–7.30pm). The purpose of this session is to share with you the new teaching methods, curriculum content and approaches to assessment in English and maths. The evening will involve: a short presentation from the Heads of English and Maths; opportunities to see real examples of tasks; an update on key methods in maths and grammatical terminology in English, and a chance for you to us ask any questions you may have. We will also discuss our expectations for homework completion and show you resources that you can use to support English and maths at home.

Bonfire Theme Menu: 03/11/17

We are excited to let you know that, following the success of our Mexican and American Theme Days last term, we have decided to do a Bonfire Themed Menu tomorrow (Friday 3 November 2017).
We also offer a selection of sandwiches, salads and jacket potatoes as an alternative should your child not wish to take part in the themed menu.
It would be great for all the students to try our delicious Bonfire themed food!
Supporting English and Maths (Year 6)
We have created bulletins for parents/carers regarding how to support pupils' progress in Maths and English at home. The latest issue of Supporting English at Home for Year 6 and Supporting Maths at Home for Year 6 are now available. The Supporting Maths and English at Home page also contains informative documents relating to the English and Maths Curriculums, which will be added to throughout the year.
Year 6 Visit Tynemouth
As part of our study of coastal locations and our work inspired by Kingdom by the Sea, Year 6 visited Tynemouth on 18 October 2017. We observed evidence of coastal erosion, used our senses to describe our surroundings and made sculptures in the sand inspired by our novel study. The wet weather certainly did not dampen our spirits and we enjoyed hot sausage and chips in the train station before returning back to school.
