Fairtrade Service at Hexham Abbey
Members of the Key Stage 3 Debating Society took part in a Fairtrade Service at Hexham Abbey on Tuesday 8 March 2016 which was also attended by First and Middle schools in the Partnership. Students from HMS have written letters to children in Myanmar recognising the role that Fairtrade plays in our society and how it has international impacts. Louis in Year 7 had a chance to read his letter out as part of the service.

We would like to say a very big 'thank you' to everyone who supported our recent Book Fair by buying books and stationery. It was a tremendous success and we raised £660 in commission, which will be spent on new books for both Beaumont and Orchard libraries.
Sumdog Maths Competition
It's time for HMS to get online and play games whilst learning maths! Every pupil has been signed up to take part in the Northumberland Contest as part of the Sumdog maths competitions. Every child should come home with log in details. Access the website via www.sumdog.com or you can download the Sumdog app. The competition is live from Friday 11 March until Thursday 17 March 2016. Mr Watters will monitor the games to see which form class is making their way up the leader board! The more you play, the more points that can be scored. Accuracy is key in scoring points. Now, let's log on, play and learn!

The Supporting Maths and English at Home page also contains informative documents relating to the English and Maths Curriculums, which will be added to throughout the year.
Year 8 Taster Days - Student Experiences
Following three successful days spent at QEHS as part of their transition, year eight were asked to write about their experiences. This narrative has been written by Marcus in Year 8.
Over and over again…almost.
The roars and screeches of what seems to be a panicking herd of elephants is getting closer. And closer. I’m running from this monster like I’ve never ran before, dreading the moment when it reaches me. My goal is tantalisingly close. But the rolling thunder behind is almost laughing at my futile efforts.
But then I find a mysterious rush of energy flowing through my veins. I can do this. My thoughts align with the beats of my heart. One more metre… come on, come on! That roar is deafening. But I realise did it. I did it! I beat the school bus!
World Book Day - tomorrow!
On Thursday 3 March 2016, all year groups at Hexham Middle are going to celebrate World Book Day. Normal lessons will take place, however our day will include an optional costume competition for pupils (and teachers!) who wish to come to school in fancy dress as a character from a novel. It will also coincide with a week-long book fair in Fellside Hall which has been kindly organised by the librarian Mrs. Hughff. Because of the generous support of the school's PTA, there will be no charge for this event. We hope that pupils enjoy celebrating World Book Day as part of the school's commitment to promoting a love of reading.
