Year 7 STEM sessions
Year 7 have had a fabulous time following a visit from the Centre for Life on 19th and 20th January 2016. Each class took part in a two-hour STEM workshop over the course of the two days. The workshop was all about designing and making a vehicle that was powered by stored energy. The students worked in pairs or small groups to design and make a vehicle out of materials provided such as dowels, wheels, nuts and bolts, cardboard, polystyrene, elastic bands etc., and tools such as glue guns, and craft knives. The aim was to encourage creative thinking, problem solving, continuous testing and retesting and setting their own goals, within the frame of practical engineering skills.
County Cross Championships
8 HMS athletes ran at that County Cross Country Championships on Tuesday 19 January 2016 at Temple Park, South Shields. The weather was ideal for running, cool but wind free. The underfoot conditions were muddy in places and ideal for racing. In the Year 7 races Olivia M and Steven ran brilliantly for 4th and 7th respectively meaning they have been selected to run for Northumberland at the Inter County XC at Middlesburgh. Also racing in the Year 7 races and supporting well were Josie (18th), Annie (35th) and Harry (35th). We had only one participant from Year 8, Olivia S. Olivia S ran a storming race against not only Year 8 girls but also Year 9 girls to come home fourth overall, she also is selected to run at the Inter County races.
Mr Gaines is very proud of the the performances of these athletes. Their performances reflects the dedication and hard work that is put into training and preparing for these races. We look forward to hearing how they get on running for Northumberland.

Christmas at HMS and Save the Children - £348.78 raised!
On Friday 18 December 2015, staff and pupils pulled out all the wool, sorry stops, and wore their best festive knits to raise money for Save the Children. It was a fantastic day linked with a range of festive activities. Students completed a range of craft tasks during this day making hand wreaths for their classroom door. They drew the outline of their hand onto coloured card and wrote a reflection of their achievements and challenges of 2015. Students also made a collective paper chain incorporating a promise or target for 2016. Individual links joined together as a year group and were then added to our Christmas tree in Fellside Hall. Students were also asked to consider the true meaning of Christmas in their activity.

Celebrating Success at Hexham Middle School
We were delighted to be able to celebrate the wide range of achievements of so many of our pupils at our end of term assemblies. Subject teachers nominated pupils for excellent effort and progress in their area this term and form tutors had the very difficult task of selecting their form tutor winner. It is wonderful to see our pupils applauding and encouraging their classmates in such a positive way.
A list of all our fantastic winners will be available shortly.
