World Autism Awareness Week
Last week was World Autism Awareness Week and at Hexham Middle School we are continuing the push to raise people's awareness of what autism is and what it means to have an autism spectrum condition. In school, pupils have engaged with informative assembly sessions where they shared what they already knew and what they wanted to know more about. We are very proud that our pupils are autism aware and will continue to raise awareness in school and the community.

HMS Pupils Design Homes of the Future

It is fantastic to know that when a competition opportunity is presented that you get a huge up take in interest. Following an initial presentation by Esh by Trivselhus, over 50 students from Years 7 and 8 expressed an interest in entering a design competition to come up with an idea for a house of the future. A visit to Hexham Gate was the catalyst for students in thinking about exciting ways to develop the way we live, work and play.
Supporting English at Home

HMS Newsletter: March 2017

HMS Rugby and Football News
A fantastic win for the girls at HMS, the team included: Charlee R, Tilly P, Molly G, Jessica G, Sadie C, Hayley H, Eliza N, Millie C and Jen T. There were three other schools at the tournament: Corbridge Middle, Highfield Middle and Hexham Middle. Higfield and Corbridge had two teams entered so there were five teams in total. Hexham Middle played three matches and were victorious in all three games. We played well and cooperated so that everyone scored at least one try. We enjoyed the tournament and hope to play in a tournament at the beach at Tynemouth next game.
U11 boys’ footballers played matches on Thursday 16 March. The fixtures were held at Hexham Middle and involved Corbridge and Ovingham schools. The pitches were wet and heavy but Hexham battled well and recorded strong performances. Ovingham are the strongest team at this year group but the score lines do not really reflect the quality of the Hexham performances. Ovingham were more clinical than HMS we squandered the few chances that we created. Hexham A drew with Corbridge Middle (1 - 1) and lost to Ovingham (6 - 0). Hexham B also drew with Corbridge (2 - 2) and lost to Ovingham (3 - 0).
Science Week 2017
Last week pupils enjoyed activities in their lessons to celebrate Science Week.
Year 5 enjoyed rescuing Eggbert by using their scientific knowledge to construct a parachute to save Eggbert from a fall! Year 6 made shadow puppets to tie in with their topic on light. STEM ambassadors from Newcastle University came in to work with Year 7 on a CSI themed workshop using cryptography and extracting the DNA from a strawberry. Year 8 took part in a ‘potions’ class. They were pleased to know they didn’t have to write the chemical equation for ‘ghoul goo’ with ‘shredded lizard gizard’!
