Rugby Update

It was a busy week last week for girl’s rugby, with some excellent results.

On Wednesday the U14 (Y8 & Y9) team travelled to Blyth for a triangular tournament with Blyth and Ponteland. When we got there Blyth could not field a full team. With strength in numbers QEHS/HMS were able to field our own team and also most of a Barbarian team!

In the first game the Barbarians played Ponteland which resulted in a 3-3 draw, with one of the Barbarians tries coming from Rosie O. Next up was Hexham v Ponteland. An excellent game with some good movement of the ball and brilliant rucking led to a 6-2 win for Hexham. Tries from Ella, Martha (3), Rose and Clara. The final game was a thrilling end to end game between Hexham and the Barbarians, seeing our girls playing against each other and they held no prisoners! It was 1-1 until the very last play of the game with Ella scoring for Hexham and Poppy for the Barbarians. A fantastic run down the wing and a great try from Connie sealed the victory for the Barbarians.

This was a fantastic afternoon of rugby and it was great to be able to field such a string squad. The atmosphere was brilliant – even when we were blocked in the car park for nearly 45 minutes after the games!

On Friday we took the U4s and U16s to Ponteland for another triangular tournament. This time both teams faced Ponteland and Morpeth.

In bitter conditions the U16s, a very strong squad, completely dominated and won both games. Tries from Charlotte, Abby, Lucy, Alana, Annabelle and Isla. The Hexham team were so strong that for the final game all the teams were mixed.

For the U14s there was a rematch of the Ponteland game. Showing the strength of rugby across the area this was a very close game with Ponteland eventually winning 3-2. Tries for Hexham for Annabelle and Beth.

In the game against Morpeth, with the temperature dropping further, the girls battled on to a 4-1 win, with tries from Martha, Clara, Rose and Gaby.

It was such a pleasure to take these girls to their tournaments. Their attitude and camaraderie was fantastic, particularly in such challenging conditions!
