Mr Barry’s Sports Round-Up

We have a very busy week of fixtures this week and we already have a lot of success stories to share.

Monday: Year 6 Girls Football

The girls were in football action and were very impressive throughout, Hexham United were fresh from their county cup run and made a good start but were narrowly beaten by Ovingham who are finalists in the county. HMS City also made a great start to the day when Elissa K and her team defended their goal for almost the entire game against a strong Highfield side; however two very late goals in the last 2 minutes saw City fall to a 2-0 defeat.

In the next round of games, two goals from Eve and one from Estella saw off a strong Highfield squad in an impressive 3-0 win for HMS United. Again HMS City defended brilliantly and almost took the lead against Ovingham but again late goals saw City beaten.

Throughout the tournament both sides played some great football with sparkling moments from Diana and Grace up front for City. Goal-keeping heroics from Heidi and tough defence from Edie and Lucy. Midfield magic from Hannah but for HMS City the player of the tournament was Elissa who was impressive each and every game and showed very intelligent play both with and without the ball.

For United, Emma continues to impress in goal and showed a lot of confidence when called upon. Emily and Rowan have formed a formidable partnership in defence and rarely looked troubled when called upon. Eve, Estella and Matilda showed power and a strong desire to win sometimes chasing a lost cause and getting a goal from it. Maria has now gained an eye for goal and got the goal of the tournament against Highfield, cutting in to strike the ball into the bottom corner.

Well done girls! Next fixture for Year 6 girls is against Corbridge on 14 March.

Tuesday: Tag Rugby, Contact Rugby and Netball

What a fantastic night for sport! In what has now became a half termly tradition, Ovingham and Hexham put on a terrific display of sport for all who came to watch.

Netball players were represented from every year group and this was a great standard of play. Although the results didn’t go our way the improvement in school netball is clear to see with great attacking play from students such as Ruby W, Grace R and Connie H in Year 8 as well as phenomenal shooting from Hugh B, Joe E, Poppy F and Hannah H in Year 5. It was, however, the defensive performances from James BS, Kieron E, Meghan S and Arthur DL who caught the eye in Year 5 games, showing great positioning despite it being their first games.

Year 6 were excellent again and Grace, Estella and Connor showed great levels of skill in attack and defence. Exciting times ahead.

Year 8 girls played extremelly well and started brilliantly taking a well-deserved lead. As confidence is growing the girls are rapidly showing how good they can be on a netball court.

Tag rugby was a huge success with incredible levels of skill and athleticism throughout. In closely contested games, two stand out performers for Year 6 were Will HA and Tom H who showed dazzling footwork to score a number of tries. In defence, Benji S kept his side organised and with the work of Josh, Daniel and their teammates displayed great tactical awareness.

In Year 5, Martha C and George L led the side into a great showing. Despite competing against older students, the Year 5 team scored a number of great tries including a Molly B run through the heart of the defence which saw Magnus R cross the line. A huge well done to all in Year 5!

A massive thank you to Sam H, Matthew D, Archie K and Luca A for running and officiating a great tournament.

Finally contact rugby, what a game! HMS rushed to a 3-try lead after great work by Harry, Will and Josh but Ovingham came storming back. The game was a pleasure to watch and showed the level of skill both schools had to offer. HMS handled the ball brilliantly with a number of flowing attacks. Thanks to some great work at the breakdown from Alfie and Ted HMS ensure regular possession of the ball and were able to always keep the game close.

Until the final few minutes HMS were trailing, however, Oliver L scored a huge try under the post which made it an easy conversion to take the lead. Huge hits from Jack, Isaac, Josh and man of the match Harry W ensured the defence was not going to be breached. HMS got a few more late points to seal a hugely impressive win.

A great night for sport!
