Mr Barry’s Sports Round-Up: KS3 Football

On Monday the girls in Years 7 and 8 were in action against Highfield.

Both teams showed an extremely confident start to their games and played with sensational energy throughout.

In game one for Year 7 they took an early lead through a terrific Katie R strike sending the ball high into the top corner. Defensive resilience from Elizabeth and Martha helped keep the Highfield team at bay until finally the impressive Isabel G was beaten: 1-1. After great work by Evie dribbling through the middle of the pitch she laid it through for Katie to grab her second of the game. Agonisingly, Highfield equalised with the last kick of the game to make 2-2 the final score.

In game one for Year 8 the girls, without a number of regular players, fought extremely hard and were very unlucky to fall behind early on to two goals on the counter. However after a magnificent run by Margarida, she dribbled past three players and squared the ball for Sienna to get her first of the game. Her second came shortly after when Alice W won the ball back with a great tackle, squared the ball to Lyla who played a great pass over the top to Sienna. She then took the shot on from 20 yards out curling the ball into the bottom corner. A couple of late goals saw HMS fall to defeat but a great performance overall.

In game two for Year 7 they were up against a Year 8 team who were full of confidence and scored a few quick goals to take a commanding lead. It was the tackling of Oliva, Poppy, Katie S and Katherine which stood out during this game as it gave players such as Emily H a platform to build upon. Another great game for the Year 7s who are a team making great progress.

In the Year 8’s second game they dominated from start to finish but just couldn’t find the back of the net. A series of last ditch blocks, the woodwork and the goal-keeper denied Hexham a well deserved win.

A very good start to the mini league for both teams!
