Mr Barry’s Sports Round-Up: Year 7 Rugby League Champions Trophy

The Year 7 boys were in the finals of the Rugby League Champions at Kingston Park.  Under the lights of the stadium it was set to be an exciting evening.

Our first opponents were Parkside and a hard-hitting defence were in front of HMS. A brilliant early run from Charlie C was so unlucky not to be given as a try. However, tries soon followed from Will HA x2, Harry W and Charlie to secure a 16-0 win. Onto the final.

In the final Eggelscliffe were the opponents and in one of the best games of junior Rugby League I have ever seen, HMS were simply sensational.  Every player was incredible. A runaway Will try put HMS 4-0 up and Jack W slotted home the conversion to make it 6-0. HMS defended like warriors and made some incredible tackles. Eventually Eggelscliffe scored in the corner to make it 6-4 but missed the conversion. HMS were agonisingly close to securing the win then had to defend successive sets to see out the game.  A diving Dan T saved a try in one corner before 10 HMS players dived into the last tackle to see HMS over the line! 6-4 final score!!

Jubilant scenes followed and huge cheers from the watching supporters and players. The boys were simply incredible. The boys are North East Champions and advance to the last 16 of the national finals. They will host the top team from Yorkshire in a few weeks time.

A huge well done to every player for an amazing performance. They played like true sportsmen and represented the school perfectly.
