Mr Barry’s Sports Round-Up: Year 8 Rugby

Year 8 Girls’ Rugby

The new Year 8 girls team were in action on the South Tyneside coast against Whitburn School on Monday. In what for most was only their first or second game they played incredibly!

The game started with the more experienced Whitburn scoring a couple of quick tries. However HMS started to grow in confidence and started making huge tackles. Elodie H showed her experience with a couple of brilliant solo efforts. Magnificent runs by Martha, Leah and Poppy almost got equalising tries but unfortunately HMS went into the break 2 tries down.

Into the second half, a genius Isabel G try brought us within striking difference however the experience of Whitburn saw them score a couple in quick succession. Abby J was immense today and make 30 to 40 yards with every carry helping Elodie H to take her individual haul to 4 tries. Emily H, Holly A and Betsy both made try saving tackles late on! Charlotte H who was a woman on a mission brought down anyone in front of her and won the ball back for HMS.

Jasmine A-B scored a magnificent try late on but sadly HMS ended up losing by 1 try, 8-7 the final score.

The girls were amazing and their enthusiasm, effort and in-game skill progress shows great signs for their next game!

Year 8 Boys’ Rugby

In a very similar story Year 8 were in rugby action on Tuesday, however this time it was the boys playing their first ever match. On Fellside field with a huge fan section filled with their friends the boys took to the field in what was for most their first ever game.

HMS played magnificently and looked like a team filled with experience! Robert C and Alex N as the veterans in the side led the charge with some monstrous tackles and were a presence throughout! Iyasu F and Finley B made a number of huge runs and were always their to support in defence! Zach M and Josh H turned on the style with a number of weaving runs along with some huge hits! Matthew M was immense with his ball carrying and his tackling technique was faultless! Oliver F left with the man of the match award for his breathtaking runs!
