CREATIVE Challenge

During the first lockdown Miss Lawton found out about an exciting project called ‘The Artists Support Pledge.’ This is a project which is based on a ‘gift’ economy for visual artists, including painters, photographers and printmakers. A ‘Gift economy’ means that when people benefit, they give back to a larger community of artists. It make sure that everyone is supported. During that first lockdown Miss Lawton liked lots of artwork that her friends had made. Some of the artists are quite well established and many of them are women.

For this week’s ‘Create’ activity Miss Lawton would like you to make your own interpretation and response to the Artist Claudia Boese’s work. Miss Lawton bought this painting from Claudia through the Artist Support Pledge and she has it in her Kitchen. It makes her smile every day!

Just like pupils at HMS and in our art lessons, artists too like to get inspiration from other artists. So in her work ‘Animal and Plant’ Claudia was inspired by the painter Courbet. You can have a look at some of his paintings as well.

Miss Lawton likes that the animal in this painting looks a bit like a kangaroo and she loves the layering of the paint so that you can see some of the colours underneath. Miss Lawton likes that the shapes are quite simple but the way that Claudia uses brush marks gives the painting lots of texture. What do you think about the painting? Do you like it? What do you think about the colours that have been used?

You could think about making artwork which includes animals are plants that are important to you. You do not have to paint, if you do not have access. You can draw, use pens or pastels. If you would like to make a 3D painting you could use an old cereal box to cut out the shapes and paint them. Use what you have available, but try and create art which reflects something about you! If you have animals at home, brilliant! You can draw and paint them.

You can have a look at the artists work NEWS (claudiaboese.info) and find out more about the artist support pledge #artistsupportpledge.

Good luck everybody. I am excited to see how your respond to this project!
