Kielder Observatory Visit

As part of our involvement in the Stellar Futures project, funded by The Reece Foundation, we had the opportunity to end this year’s programme with a visit to Kielder Observatory. This was a great way to inspire pupils further about the role of an astronomer and the great work that takes place there.

We are so fortunate to live near the nationally recognised ‘Dark Skies’ designation and have the opportunity to experience the awe and wonder of planet Earth and the universe. For some pupils, this was their first time to visit the observatory. They got to meet Adam and James in their workplace, learning more about the use of telescopes to explore space as well as skill of taking images of the night sky.

Pupils were impressed that they got to stand on top of a rock sample from Mars. To top off the trip, pupils got the chance to have lunch in front of the glorious Kielder landscape as well as visit the gift shop and buy a little souvenir (including small fragments of common meteorite). The Stellar Futures programme will continue next year.
